Biography:

Shawn Michaels is arguably one of the most popular and greatest professional wrestlers in sports-entertainment history and is considered to be the greatest superstar in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment. With his sexy looks, the thrilling Michaels has been a heart-breaking dude and has attracted ladies like Sensational Sherri. Beginning his career in the tag team The Rockers, Michaels overshadowed his partner Marty Jannetty by betraying him and beginning his own career and becoming The Heartbreak Kid, a full narcissistic man who flirted with girls and posed before his own mirrors before his matches. After initial success in a tag team with Diesel, Michaels moved on to his own career and became one of the most profilic and greatest superstars. He has a unique entrance theme that Michaels has sung himself and his Sweet Chin Music is known to have ended many of his partnerships. He is also known for being a part of numerous controversies and rivalries with Bret Hart and Mr. McMahon. He also played a key role in Montreal Screwjob, an event in which Bret Hart's career ended. Michaels had applied Hart's Sharpshooter at Survivor Series 1997 and Vince McMahon ordered the referee to ring the bell without Hart even submitting to the hold.

Michaels has the distinction of competing in WWE's first-ever Ladder match, Iron Man match, Hell in a Cell match and Elimination Chamber match. Michaels has competed against almost every competitor of his era and is also one of the founders of D-Generation X, the most popular and greatest team in WWE history. World Wrestling Federation (1988 - 2000)
Shawn Michaels was one half of Midnight Rockers with Marty Jannetty during the 1980s. Midnight Rockers left American Wrestling Association (AWA) in 1988 and joined World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and changed the team name to The Rockers. On June 18 edition of Superstars, Rockers debuted on WWF television as babyfaces and competed in their first WWF match, defeating local competitors Iron Mike Sharpe and The Intruder. After a month of defeating local competitors, Rockers suffered their first loss against Fabulous Rougeau Brothers on August 8 edition of Prime Time Wrestling. Rockers became popular with the fans because of their high-flying action.

Michaels participated in the 1988 King of the Ring Tournament, defeating Danny Davis in the first round but losing to Ron Bass in the quarter-final round. On November 1 edition of Prime Time Wrestling, Rockers received their first championship opportunity as they unsuccessfully challenged Demolition for the WWF Tag Team Championship. At Survivor Series, Rockers made their pay-per-view debut. Powers of Pain, British Bulldogs, Hart Foundation, Young Stallions and Rockers competed against Demolition, Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, The Conquistadors, The Bolsheviks and Brain Busters in a Survivor Series match. Rockers were eliminated due to a double disqualification against Brain Busters. Team Powers of Pain won. Powers of Pain survived the match.

Rockers began a rivalry with Brain Busters because of their confrontation at Survivor Series. The two teams competed in numerous tag team matches against each other that elevated the status of both teams. Entering 1989, Michaels participated in his first Royal Rumble match as the #9 entrant. He lasted fourteen minutes until he was eliminated by Randy Savage and Arn Anderson. Big John Studd won the Royal Rumble. At Saturday Night's Main Event XX, Rockers fought Brain Busters to a double count-out. At WrestleMania V, Rockers made their WrestleMania debut in a losing effort against Twin Towers.

Rockers feuded with Fabulous Rougeau Brothers during the mid-1989. At SummerSlam, Tito Santana and Rockers lost to Rick Martel and Fabulous Rougeau Brothers in a six-man tag team match. At Survivor Series, Rockers were on Ultimate Warrior's Ultimate Warriors, consisting of Jim Neidhart against Bobby Heenan's Heenan Family, consisting of Arn Anderson and Colossal Connection. Michaels was eliminated by Anderson. Team Ultimate Warriors won. Ultimate Warrior survived the match. At Saturday Night's Main Event XXIV, Rockers defeated Brain Busters in a Two out of Three Falls match to end the longtime rivalry between the two teams. It turned out to be Brain Busters' last match as they left WWF.

Entering 1990, Michaels participated in the 1990 Royal Rumble match as the #26 entrant. He lasted twelve seconds until he was eliminated by Ultimate Warrior. Hulk Hogan win the Royal Rumble. Rockers began a rivalry with Powers of Pain, which resulted in Marty Jannetty getting injured. At Ultimate Challenge, Rockers unsuccessfully challenged Colossal Connection for the WWF Tag Team Championship through disqualification after Demolition attacked Colossal Connection. Rockers began their next rivalry with Powers of Pain's manager Mr. Fuji's new clients Orient Express, which culminated in a match between the two teams at WrestleMania VI, which Orient Express won by count-out after Fuji threw salt into Jannetty's eyes.

At Saturday Night's Main Event XXVI, Rockers competed against Hart Foundation to a double disqualification when Demolition interfered and attacked both teams. At Saturday Night's Main Event XXVII, Rockers unsuccessfully challenged Demolition for the WWF Tag Team Championship after Ax delivered a Clothesline to Michaels behind the referee's back. Rockers began a rivalry with Power and Glory, which culminated in a match between the two teams at SummerSlam, which Power and Glory won. Michaels suffered an injury during the match and was out of action for one month. He continued to appear on WWF television accompanying his tag team partner Marty Jannetty during matches.

On October 30, Rockers controversially won the WWF Tag Team Championship from Hart Foundation but the titles were returned to Hart Foundation because the title change could not air on television due to the top rope falling during the match. At Survivor Series, Rockers were on Jake Roberts' The Vipers, consisting of Jimmy Snuka, against Rick Martel's The Visionaries, consisting of The Warlord and Power and Glory in a Survivor Series match, with the survivors competing in the Ultimate Match of Survival. Michaels was eliminated by Paul Roma. The entire Visionaries survived the match.

Entering 1991, Rockers renewed their rivalry against Orient Express, which culminated in a WrestleMania VI rematch between the two teams at Royal Rumble, which Rockers won. On February 16 edition of Superstars, Rockers participated in a Tag Team Battle Royal to determine the #1 contenders for the WWF Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania VII. Rockers eliminated themselves when Michaels accidentally eliminated Marty Jannetty. Nasty Boys won the Battle Royal. At Road to WrestleMania VII, Michaels lost to Mr. Perfect by disqualification when Big Bossman attacked Perfect.

Rockers began a rivalry with Barbarian and Haku, which culminated in a match between the two teams at WrestleMania VII, which Rockers won. At Saturday Night's Main Event XXIX, Michaels participated in a Battle Royal. He was eliminated by eventual winner Mr. Perfect. At UK Rampage, Rockers defeated Orient Express in a tag team match. At Battle Royal at Albert Hall, Rockers competed against Nasty Boys in a losing effort. Later that night, Michaels participated in a Battle Royal. He was eliminated by The Mountie. British Bulldog won the Battle Royal.

At Survivor Series, Rockers and The Bushwhackers competed against Nasty Boys and Beverly Brothers in a Survivor Series match. Michaels was eliminated by Brian Knobbs. Nasty Boys and Beverly Brothers won. Blake Beverly survived the match. Michaels was eliminated from the match due to a mistaken move by his partner Marty Jannetty, which resulted in Michaels storming off in anger and abandoning his partner. Jannetty's accidental mistakes would lead to Michaels losing his matches and the differences continued to increase between the two. On December 28 edition of Superstars, Rockers unsuccessfully challenged Legion of Doom for the WWF Tag Team Championship. It turned out to be Rockers' last match as a tag team as the team started breaking up as Michaels started growing furious over Jannetty.

Entering 1992, Michaels and Marty Jannetty were invited as guests on Brutus Beefcake's talk show Barber Shop on January 12 edition of Wrestling Challenge. The two seemed to remove their differences before Michaels turned on Jannetty by delivering him a Superkick and throwing his face into a glass window. As a result of betraying Jannetty, Michaels turned heel and Rockers ended. Michaels moved on his own and began his singles career. At Royal Rumble, Michaels participated in the 1992 Royal Rumble match as the #6 entrant for the vacated WWF Championship. Michaels lasted fifteen minutes until he was eliminated by Tito Santana. Ric Flair won the Royal Rumble.

Michaels changed his gimmick from the high-flyer to the cocky "Heartbreak Kid" who would use his good looks to attract women and flirt with them. He appointed Sensational Sherri as his valet because Sherri claimed him to be the man of her dreams. She recorded Michaels' new theme song and called him her Sexy Boy. Michaels began using Teardrop Suplex as his new finishing maneuver. At March to WrestleMania VIII, Michaels defeated Roddy Piper by disqualification when referee Earl Hebner disqualified Piper for trying to hit Michaels with Sensational Sherri's boot. Michaels began a rivalry with Tito Santana over their confrontation at Royal Rumble, which culminated in a match between the two at WrestleMania VIII, which Michaels won.

On April 14 televised show in Germany, Michaels participated in a Battle Royal. He was eliminated by Legion of Doom. British Bulldog won the Battle Royal. At UK Rampage, Michaels received his first opportunity for the WWF Championship as he unsuccessfully challenged Randy Savage for the championship. On May 18, Michaels participated in the Bashed in the USA Battle Royal. Tatanka won the Battle Royal. Michaels' departure from the arena was often announced as "Shawn Michaels has left the building" whenever he and Sensational Sherri departed on a limousine.

Michaels began a rivalry with Rick Martel, who pursued the affections of Sensational Sherri. The rivalry culminated in a match between the two at SummerSlam, which ended in a double count-out. Sherri fainted during the match and both men tried to revive her. On October 31 edition of Superstars, Michaels protected himself from being attacked by his former partner Marty Jannetty as Jannetty tried to smash Michaels with his mirror. Michaels used Sensational Sherri as a shield and got her hit with the mirror.

At Saturday Night's Main Event XXXI (taped October 27), Michaels won his first championship in WWF as he defeated British Bulldog to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship. At Survivor Series, Michaels unsuccessfully challenged Bret Hart for the WWF Championship. Entering 1993, Michaels successfully defended the WWF Intercontinental Championship against Marty Jannetty after Sensational Sherri accidentally hit Jannetty with her boot. On February 15 edition of Monday Night Raw, Michaels participated in a Battle Royal. He was eliminated by Tito Santana and Tatanka. Razor Ramon won the Battle Royal.

Michaels retained the WWF Intercontinental Championship by losing via count-out against Tatanka at WrestleMania IX and Crush at UK Rampage. On May 17 edition of Monday Night Raw, Michaels lost the championship to Marty Jannetty after Mr. Perfect threw his towel into Michaels' face. As a result, Michaels began feuding with Perfect. Michaels' reign ended at 202 days. On May 22 edition of Superstars, Michaels fought Crush to a double count-out in a King of the Ring qualifying match.

At June 6 house show, Michaels defeated Marty Jannetty to win his second WWF Intercontinental Championship after Diesel distracted Jannetty. After regaining the championship, Michaels introduced Diesel as his new bodyguard. At King of the Ring, Michaels defeated Crush to retain the championship after distraction by two Doink the Clowns. At SummerSlam Spectacular, Michaels cheated to defeat Bob Backlund to retained the championship. At SummerSlam, Michaels defeated Mr. Perfect by count-out to retain the championship after Diesel threw Perfect into the steel ring steps.

On September 27 edition of Monday Night Raw, Michaels was stripped off the WWF Intercontinental Championship by the WWF President Jack Tunney for failing to defend the championship within 30 days. Michaels' reign ended at 113 days. As a result, Michaels was suspended. At Survivor Series, Michaels returned to WWF television and substituted for Jerry Lawler. He was the captain of Shawn Michaels and His Knights, consisting of Red Knight, Blue Knight and Black Knight against Bret Hart's Hart Family, consisting of Bruce Hart, Keith Hart and Owen Hart. Hart Family won. Bret, Bruce and Keith survived the match.

Following his return, Michaels began carrying a WWF Intercontinental Championship belt and claimed to be the real champion since the official champion Razor Ramon had never beaten Michaels for the championship and had won it because of Michaels' suspension. Entering 1994, Michaels interfered in Ramon's championship match against Irwin R. Schyster and attacked Ramon with his fake championship belt at Royal Rumble. Later that night, Michaels participated in the 1994 Royal Rumble match as the #18 entrant. He lasted twenty-nine minutes until he was eliminated by eventual winner Lex Luger. Bret Hart and Lex Luger co-won the Battle Royal.

At WrestleMania X, Michaels unsuccessfully challenged Razor Ramon in the first-ever Ladder match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship to determine the Undisputed Intercontinental Champion with both Ramon's and Michaels' championship belts tied above the ladder. The match showcased the talents of Ramon and Michaels and was considered to be one of the best matches of Michaels. The match became notable due to Michaels delivering a Splash from the top of the ladder onto Ramon. The match was instrumental in elevating Michaels' status as a main event competitor.

Michaels soon became injured and helped his bodyguard Diesel in defeating Razor Ramon for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. Michaels was out of action and began accompanying Diesel during his matches. He introduced his own talk show Heartbreak Hotel in which he interviewed WWF wrestlers. After recovering from his injuries, Michaels formed a tag team with Diesel. At August 28 house show, Diesel and Michaels defeated The Headshrinkers to win the WWF Tag Team Championship. At SummerSlam, Michaels accidentally cost Diesel, the WWF Intercontinental Championship against Razor Ramon.

At Survivor Series, Michaels and Diesel were the captains of The Teamsters, consisting of Jim Neidhart, Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett against Razor Ramon's Bad Guys, consisting of British Bulldog, 1-2-3 Kid and New Headshrinkers in a Survivor Series match. The entire team was eliminated when Michaels accidentally delivered a Sweet Chin Music to Diesel, which resulted in Michaels and Diesel fighting with each other. Bad Guys won. Razor Ramon survived the match. The circumstances of the match resulted in Michaels and Diesel breaking up their team and beginning a feud against each other. As a result, Michaels and Diesel vacated the WWF Tag Team Championship. Michaels and Diesel's reign ended at 87 days.

Diesel won the WWF Championship after the team's departure and Michaels began interfering in Diesel's matches in attempt to cost him the championship. Entering 1995, Michaels participated in the 1995 Royal Rumble match as the #1 entrant at Royal Rumble. He lasted thirty-eight minutes in the match. Michaels last eliminated British Bulldog to win the 1995 Royal Rumble and earn the opportunity to compete for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania, thus establishing himself as a main eventer. On February 25 edition of Superstars, Michaels participated in a Battle Royal. He eliminated himself. British Bulldog won the Battle Royal.

After winning the Royal Rumble, Michaels introduced Sycho Sid as his new bodyguard. At WrestleMania XI, Michaels brought Jenny McCarthy to accompany him during the match. He unsuccessfully challenged Diesel for the WWF Championship. After failing to capture the championship, Michaels blamed Sid for the loss and fired him, leading to Sid turning on Michaels by attacking and injuring him. As a result, Michaels turned babyface. He was out of action for one month. On May 22 edition of Monday Night Raw, Michaels returned to WWF television and defeated King Kong Bundy to qualify for the King of the Ring tournament. Upon his return, Michaels received fan support and his popularity started increasing within the audiences.

At King of the Ring, Michaels participated in the 1995 King of the Ring Tournament, competing against Kama to a 15-minute time limit draw in the quarter-final round. At In Your House 2: The Lumberjacks, Michaels defeated Jeff Jarrett to win his third WWF Intercontinental Championship after The Roadie's distraction accidentally cost Jarrett the match. At SummerSlam, Michaels successfully defended the championship against Razor Ramon in a Ladder match, a rematch from WrestleMania X. Michaels reunited with his former tag team partner Diesel.

At In Your House 3: Triple Header, Diesel and Michaels defeated Yokozuna and British Bulldog in a Triple Header match, with Diesel's WWF Championship, Michaels' WWF Intercontinental Championship and Yokozuna and Owen Hart's WWF Tag Team Championship on the line, with Bulldog substituting for Hart. The match stipulated that the wrestler who would be pinned would lose his championship to the wrestler who scored the fall. As a result, Diesel and Michaels won their second WWF Tag Team Championship. The following night, on September 25 edition of Monday Night Raw, Diesel and Michaels were stripped off the championship because of the controversial ending of the previous night's championship match in which the illegal Owen Hart was pinned for the victory. Diesel and Michaels' reign ended at 1 day.

At In Your House 4: Great White North, Michaels forfeited the WWF Intercontinental Championship to Dean Douglas after suffering injuries sustained in an attack at a club in Syracuse, New York, United States of America. Michaels' reign ended at 91 days. At Survivor Series, Michaels was the captain of Team Michaels, consisting of British Bulldog, Ahmed Johnson and Sycho Sid against Razor Ramon's Team Razor, consisting of Yokozuna, Owen Hart and Dean Douglas in a Wildcard Survivor Series match, in which wrestlers were randomly chosen on teams. Team Michaels won. Michaels, British Bulldog and Ahmed Johnson survived the match. Michaels' injuries worsened as he collapsed during a match against Owen Hart and his injuries would force him into retirement.

Entering 1996, Michaels made a surprise return to WWF television at Royal Rumble. He participated in the 1996 Royal Rumble match as the #18 entrant. He lasted twenty-six minutes. Michaels last eliminated Diesel to win the 1996 Royal Rumble and earn the opportunity to compete for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania. Michaels shocked everyone by coming out of retirement and winning the Royal Rumble and became the second person to win two consecutive Royal Rumble matches.

After winning the Royal Rumble, Michaels began a rivalry with Owen Hart, which culminated in a match between the two with Michaels' WrestleMania championship match on the line, at In Your House 6: Rage in the Cage, which Michaels won to retain his title shot. At WrestleMania XII, Michaels defeated Bret Hart in the first-ever Ironman match to win the WWF Championship, thus the Heartbreak Kid achieved his boyhood dream of headlining WrestleMania and winning the sports-entertainment's most prestigious prize, thus finally becoming a world heavyweight champion after his struggle of eight years. After winning the championship, Michaels became the most popular and top wrestler of the company and his trainer Jose Lothario began escorting him to ring during his matches.

At In Your House 7: Good Friends, Better Enemies, Michaels successfully defended the WWF Championship against Diesel in a No Holds Barred match. Michaels began his next rivalry against British Bulldog. At In Your House 8: Beware of Dog, Michaels retained the championship against Bulldog in a match that resulted in a no contest when both men had their shoulders pinned on the mat. At King of the Ring, Michaels defeated Bulldog to retain the championship to end the rivalry, with Mr. Perfect as the special guest referee. At In Your House 9: International Incident, Michaels, Ahmed Johnson and Sycho Sid competed as People's Posse against Camp Cornette, consisting of British Bulldog, Owen Hart and Vader. Camp Cornette won after interference by Camp Cornette's manager Jim Cornette grabbed Michaels' foot, allowing Vader to deliver a Vader Bomb. As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Vader, which culminated in a match between the two for Michaels' WWF Championship at SummerSlam, which Michaels won to retain the championship.

At In Your House 10: Mind Games, Michaels defeated Mankind by disqualification to retain the WWF Championship when Vader attacked Michaels. At Survivor Series, Michaels lost the championship to Sycho Sid in a No Disqualification match. Michaels' reign ended at 231 days. At In Your House 12: It's Time, Michaels was the guest commentator during Sid's WWF Championship defense against Bret Hart. Michaels was involved in the ending of the match when Hart collided with Michaels, leading to Sid defeating Hart in an attack set up by Sid. After the match, Michaels was attacked by Hart and the two began feuding with each other.

Entering 1997, Michaels defeated Sycho Sid to win his second WWF Championship at Royal Rumble. After winning the championship, Michaels suffered a knee injury. On February 13 edition of Monday Night Raw, Michaels vacated the championship due to his injury. Michaels' reign ended at 25 days. As a result of the injury, Michaels was told by his doctor that he may never wrestle again. He claimed that he had lost his smile and he had to regain it back. Michaels returned to WWF television on March 17 edition of Raw is War.

Michaels joined forces with Stone Cold Steve Austin and began feuding with Bret Hart and his Hart Foundation, as Hart claimed that Michaels' injury was fake, prompting Michaels to return to the ring. On May 26 edition of Raw is War, Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated British Bulldog and Owen Hart to win the WWF Tag Team Championship. However, after winning the championship, Michaels and Austin developed a jealousy against each other over determining the team captain, which culminated in a match between the two to determine the leader at King of the Ring, which ended in a double disqualification as both men attacked the referees.

Michaels was injured during a backstage fight against Bret Hart, resulting in Michaels getting injured and vacating the WWF Tag Team Championship. Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin's reign ended at 49 days. Michaels was out of action for one month. On July 14 edition of Raw is War, Michaels returned to WWF television. At SummerSlam, Michaels served as the special guest referee for the WWF Championship match between Undertaker and Bret Hart. The match stipulated that if Michaels favored Undertaker in attempt to prevent Hart from winning, Michaels would be banned from wrestling in United States and if Hart did not win the championship, Hart would be banned from wrestling in United States. Michaels accidentally attacked Undertaker and had to count the pinfall for Hart to save his career.

Michaels had accidentally helped Bret Hart in winning the WWF Championship but he turned heel by appointing Rick Rude as his insurance policy. Michaels also formed an alliance with Hunter Hearst Helmsley and his bodyguard Chyna. Michaels began a rivalry with Undertaker over costing him the championship. At Ground Zero: In Your House, Michaels fought Undertaker to a no contest when both men attacked the referees and Helmsley and Chyna interfered in the match. At One Night Only, Michaels cheated to defeat British Bulldog to win the WWF European Championship after assistance by Rick Rude, Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Chyna.

After winning the WWF European Championship, Michaels formed a group with Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Chyna and Rick Rude and the new group began a rivalry with Hart Foundation. Bret Hart made fun of the group and called them degenerates, leading to Michaels naming the group D-Generation X. Michaels shortened his teammate Hunter Hearst Helmsley's name to Triple H. At Badd Blood: In Your House, Michaels cheated to defeat Undertaker in the first-ever Hell in a Cell match to determine the #1 contender for the WWF Championship after Kane debuted in WWF and delivered a Tombstone to Undertaker.

At Survivor Series, Michaels controversially defeated Bret Hart to win his third WWF Championship when Michaels applied Hart's submission maneuver Sharpshooter on Hart and WWF commentator Vince McMahon shocked the WWF audience by ordering the referee Earl Hebner to ring the bell and award the championship to Michaels without Hart even submitting to the hold. Michaels became a double champion. At D-Generation X; In Your House, Michaels retained the WWF Championship against Ken Shamrock through disqualification when DX attacked Shamrock.

On December 22 (taped December 11) edition of Raw is War, Michaels lost the WWF European Championship to DX teammate Triple H in a match ordered by the WWF Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter. Michaels laid down for Triple H to pin him for the victory. Michaels' reign ended at 82 days. Entering 1998, Michaels successfully defended the WWF Championship against Undertaker in a Casket match at Royal Rumble after Kane delivered a Chokeslam to Undertaker. Michaels suffered a career-threatening back injury during the match when Undertaker backdropped Michaels onto the casket. As a result, Michaels was out of action.

At No Way Out of Texas: In Your House, Michaels was scheduled to compete in an eight-man tag team match but he was replaced by Savio Vega due to injury. At WrestleMania XIV, Michaels lost the WWF Championship to Stone Cold Steve Austin, with DX enforcer Mike Tyson as the special guest enforcer. Michaels' reign ended at 140 days. After the match, Tyson turned on DX by punching Michaels in the face. After losing the championship, Michaels retired from wrestling due to suffering the back injury at Royal Rumble. Michaels disappeared from WWF television.

Michaels made a surprise return to WWF television on July 13 edition of Raw is War as a guest commentator. On November 23 edition of Raw is War, Michaels left D-Generation X by turning on the team as he attacked DX teammate X-Pac with a steel chair and helping The Rock defeat X-Pac to retain the WWF Championship. As a result, Michaels joined The Corporation. Michaels was made the WWF Commissioner by Mr. McMahon. Michaels misused his authority to make decisions that favored Corporation members. On January 4, 1999 edition of Raw is War, Michaels was fired from his position by McMahon after The Rock lost the WWF Championship.

As a result, Michaels turned babyface and rejoined DX Army. He began making decisions against Vince McMahon and Corporation, preventing them from doing wrong jobs. Undertaker was leading Ministry of Darkness and he began showing signs that he took orders from a Higher Power and Michaels was rumored to be the Higher Power. McMahon was ultimately revealed to be the Higher Power. Michaels disappeared from WWF television. Entering 2000, Michaels returned to WWF television at Judgment Day as the special guest referee for an Ironman match between The Rock and Triple H for the WWF Championship. Michaels handed his position of WWF Commissioner to Mick Foley and left WWF.

At Armageddon, Michaels cut a promo from WWF New York and ended his WWF career. In 2002, Michaels made an appearance at Royal Rumble, cutting a promo from WWF New York over the 2002 Royal Rumble match.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2002 - 2010)
Raw (2002 - 2010)
After WWF was renamed to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002, Michaels made a surprise return to WWE television after two years on June 3 edition of Raw. He turned heel as he was introduced by former tag team partner Kevin Nash as the newest member of New World Order (nWo), with Michaels kicking Booker T out of nWo by delivering him a Sweet Chin Music. However, nWo did not last longer and disbanded. Michaels had recovered from his career-ending back injury and joined the Raw brand as an active wrestler and turned babyface.


He convinced former D-Generation X teammate Triple H to leave the SmackDown! brand and join him on the Raw roster at Vengeance. The following night, on July 22 edition of Raw, Michaels and Triple H had a DX reunion, during which Triple H turned on Michaels by attacking him. As a result, Michaels began feuding with Triple H. At SummerSlam, Michaels competed in his first match as part of the Raw roster and in his first WWE match in four years since WrestleMania XIV, defeating Triple H in a Street Fight. After the match, Michaels was injured by Triple H, who attacked him with a sledgehammer. As a result, Michaels was out of action for two months.

On October 28 edition of Raw, Michaels made a surprise return to WWE television by coming out of a casket during a Casket match between Triple H and Kane and cost Triple H, the match. At Survivor Series, Michaels defeated Triple H, Chris Jericho, Kane, Booker T and Rob Van Dam in the first-ever Elimination Chamber match to win the World Heavyweight Championship. At Armageddon, Michaels lost the championship back to Triple H in a Three Stages of Hell match. Michaels' reign ended at 28 days.

Entering 2003, Michaels participated in the 2003 Royal Rumble match as the #1 entrant at Royal Rumble. Michaels was attacked from behind by Chris Jericho and Jericho continued to assault him before easily eliminating him. Michaels lasted two minutes. Brock Lesnar won the 2003 Royal Rumble. As a result of the assault by Chris Jericho, Michaels began a rivalry with Jericho. At No Way Out, Michaels rescued Jeff Hardy from an attack by Jericho and Christian. At WrestleMania XIX, Michaels defeated Jericho.

Kevin Nash returned to WWE and Michaels reunited his tag team with Nash. At Backlash, Michaels, Kevin Nash and Booker T competed against Triple H, Ric Flair and Chris Jericho in a losing effort. Michaels began feuding with Triple H's group Evolution. Michaels began a rivalry with Evolution member Ric Flair, which culminated in a match between the two at Bad Blood, which Flair won after Randy Orton hit Michaels with a steel chair. At SummerSlam, Michaels competed against Triple H, Goldberg, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and Kevin Nash in an Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H retained the championship.

Michaels began his next rivalry against Evolution member Randy Orton, which culminated in a match between the two at Unforgiven, which Orton won after assistance by Ric Flair. At Survivor Series, Michaels was the captain of Team Austin, consisting of Rob Van Dam, Booker T and Dudley Boyz, against Chris Jericho's Team Bischoff, consisting of Christian, Scott Steiner, Mark Henry and Randy Orton in a Survivor Series match. Michaels was eliminated by Orton. Team Bischoff won. Orton survived the match. As a result of Team Austin losing the match, co-Raw General Manager Stone Cold Steve Austin was fired from his position. Michaels began a rivalry with Evolution member Batista, which culminated in a match between the two at Armageddon, which Michaels won.

Entering 2004, Michaels fought Triple H to a no contest in a Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H retained the championship. Michaels began pursuing the championship. At WrestleMania XX, Michaels competed against Triple H and Chris Benoit in a Triple Threat match for the championship. Benoit won the championship. At Backlash, Michaels competed in a WrestleMania XX rematch against Chris Benoit and Triple H in a Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Benoit retained the championship.

Michaels began a rivalry with Triple H, which culminated in a Hell in a Cell match between the two at Bad Blood, which Triple H won. The following night, on June 14 edition of Raw, Michaels was attacked by Kane, thus injuring Michaels and putting him out of action for two months.  At Unforgiven, Michaels returned to WWE television and defeated Kane in a No Disqualification match. At Taboo Tuesday, Michaels unsuccessfully challenged Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship after Edge delivered a Spear to Michaels. Michaels was out of action for two months as he suffered a meniscus injury.

Entering 2005, Michaels returned to WWE television as a special guest referee in an Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship at New Year's Revolution. Michaels avenged his injury by delivering a Sweet Chin Music to Edge and getting him eliminated from the match. As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Edge. At Royal Rumble, Michaels lost to Edge. Later that night, Michaels participated in the 2005 Royal Rumble match as the #19 entrant. He lasted four minutes until he was eliminated by Kurt Angle. Batista won the 2005 Royal Rumble.

On February 28 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Edge in a Street Fight to end the rivalry. Michaels began his next rivalry against Kurt Angle due to Angle attacking Michaels at Royal Rumble. During the rivalry, Angle humiliated Michaels' former tag team partner Marty Jannetty and former manager Sensational Sherri. Their rivalry culminated in a match between the two at WrestleMania 21, which Angle won. Michaels began a rivalry with Muhammad Hassan and Daivari and convinced the veteran Hulk Hogan to come back to WWE and become his partner. Michaels and Hulk Hogan began a rivalry with Muhammad Hassan and Daivari, which culminated in a tag team match between the two teams at Backlash, which Michaels and Hogan won.

The following night, on May 2 edition of Raw, Michaels participated in the Gold Rush Tournament to determine the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. He defeated Shelton Benjamin in the quarter-final round. On May 9 edition of Raw, Michaels lost to eventual winner Edge in the semi-final round. Michaels renewed his rivalry with Kurt Angle, which culminated in a WrestleMania 21 rematch between the two at Vengeance, which Michaels won.

On July 4 edition of Raw, Michaels turned heel by betraying Hulk Hogan by delivering him a Sweet Chin Music as the two were posing in the ring after winning a tag team match. As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Hogan, which culminated in a match between the two at SummerSlam, which Hogan won. After the match, Michaels turned babyface by shaking hands with Hogan and respecting him. Michaels began his next rivalry with Chris Masters, which culminated in a match between the two at Unforgiven, which Michaels won.

On October 17 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Carlito to qualify for being one of the choices for the WWE Championship match at Taboo Tuesday. At Taboo Tuesday, Michaels competed against John Cena and Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship. Cena retained the championship. At Survivor Series, Michaels was the captain of Team Raw, consisting of Kane, Big Show, Carlito and Chris Masters, against Batista's Team SmackDown!, consisting of John "Bradshaw" Layfield, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio and Bobby Lashley in a Survivor Series match. Michaels was eliminated by Orton. Team SmackDown! won. Orton survived the match.

On December 12 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Big Show by disqualification in an Elimination Chamber qualification match after Triple H hit Michaels with a steel chair. At Tribute to the Troops, Michaels defeated Triple H in a Boot Camp match. Entering 2006, Michaels competed against John Cena, Carlito, Chris Masters, Kane and Kurt Angle in an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship at New Year's Revolution. Michaels was eliminated by Carlito. Cena retained the championship. Michaels began feuding with Mr. McMahon by telling him to move on after Montreal Screwjob.

At Royal Rumble, Michaels participated in the 2006 Royal Rumble match as the #25 entrant. He lasted twelve minutes until he was eliminated by Shane McMahon. As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Shane, which culminated in a Street Fight between the two at Saturday Night's Main Event XXXII, which Shane won after Vince McMahon screwed Michaels by ringing the bell as Shane had applied Michaels in Sharpshooter, in what was similar to Montreal Screwjob at Survivor Series 1997 when Michaels had applied Bret Hart in the Sharpshooter and Vince had ordered the bell to be rung.

At WrestleMania 22, Michaels defeated Mr. McMahon in a No Holds Barred match. At Backlash, Michaels and "God" competed against The McMahons in a No Holds Barred match. Michaels lost after Spirit Squad attacked Michaels. Triple H became involved in Michaels' rivalry with McMahons as Triple H would attempt to attack Michaels but accidentally attacked Shane McMahon on one occasion and fought Spirit Squad on one occasion when Spirit Squad leader Kenny snatched Triple H's sledgehammer to hit Michaels.

On June 12 edition of Raw, Michaels and Triple H officially reformed D-Generation X. DX began a rivalry with Spirit Squad, defeating them in a Handicap match at Vengeance, and in a Handicap Elimination match at Saturday Night's Main Event XXXIII. DX soon became Raw's dominant tag team by dominating and humiliating The McMahons and their allies including Big Show, Finlay, William Regal, Mr. Kennedy, Umaga and Spirit Squad with satirical parodies and comical acts. At SummerSlam, DX defeated McMahons. At Unforgiven, DX defeated Big Show and McMahons in a Handicap Hell in a Cell match to end the rivalry with McMahons. It was the biggest rivalry in WWE throughout summer of 2006.

DX began their next rivalry with Rated RKO. At Cyber Sunday, DX lost to Rated RKO with Eric Bischoff as the special guest referee. DX's undefeated streak ended as DX suffered their first loss. At Survivor Series, DX were the captains of Team DX, consisting of CM Punk and The Hardys, against Rated RKO's Team Rated RKO, consisting of Gregory Helms, Johnny Nitro and Mike Knox in a Survivor Series match. Team DX won. The entire Team DX survived the match. On December 18 edition of Raw, Michaels participated in a Battle Royal to determine the #1 contender for the WWE Championship. He was eliminated by Edge for the win.

Entering 2007, DX competed against Rated RKO for the World Tag Team Championship at New Year's Revolution. The match ended in a no contest after Triple H tore his tendon quadriceps muscle. As a result, Triple H was injured and was out of action. Michaels continued to use the DX entrance theme and DX wrestling attire and carried on the DX legacy on his own while continued to feud with Rated RKO. At Royal Rumble, Michaels participated in the 2007 Royal Rumble match as the #23 entrant. He lasted twenty-four minutes until he was eliminated by Undertaker for the win.

The following night, on January 29 edition of Raw, Michaels teamed with John Cena to defeat Rated RKO to win the World Tag Team Championship. On February 5 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Edge and Randy Orton in a Triple Threat match to become the #1 contender for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 23. John Cena and Shawn Michaels began feuding with Batista and Undertaker. At No Way Out, John Cena and Michaels defeated Batista and Undertaker after Batista turned on Undertaker by delivering a Spinebuster. On March 26 edition of Raw, Cena and Michaels lost to Batista and Undertaker in a No Way Out rematch after Undertaker abandoned Batista and Michaels delivered a Sweet Chin Music to Cena.

At WrestleMania 23, Michaels unsuccessfully challenged John Cena for the WWE Championship. Michaels came out of DX attire and reverted back to using his own wrestling attire and his own entrance theme. On April 2 edition of Raw, John Cena and Michaels defended the World Tag Team Championship in a Battle Royal. They last eliminated King Booker and Finlay to win the Battle Royal retain the championship. Cena and Michaels were forced by Jonathan Coachman to defend the championship in an immediate second Battle Royal. Michaels turned on Cena by eliminating him. The Hardys won the Battle Royal. John Cena and Michaels' reign ended at 63 days.

At Backlash, Michaels competed against John Cena, Edge and Randy Orton in a Fatal Four-Way match for the WWE Championship. Cena retained the championship. On April 30 edition of Raw, Michaels was found bloodied backstage. Edge and Randy Orton were also found injured and the attacker was revealed to be The Great Khali. On May 7 edition of Raw, Michaels lost to Khali in a match to determine the #1 contender for the WWE Championship. Michaels began a rivalry with Randy Orton, which culminated in a match between the two at Judgment Day, which Orton won by referee stoppage. After the match, Orton continued to attack Michaels, thus injuring him and putting him out of action for five months.

On October 8 edition of Raw, Michaels made a surprise return to WWE television to avenge his injury on Randy Orton by delivering a Sweet Chin Music to Orton. At Cyber Sunday, Michaels competed against Orton for the WWE Championship, with Orton retaining the championship through disqualification. Orton delivered a Low Blow to Michaels to get disqualified. At Survivor Series, Michaels unsuccessfully challenged Orton for the championship in a match that stipulated that Michaels would not get one more title shot if he lost and would be disqualified for using the Sweet Chin Music and Orton would lose the championship if he got disqualified.

Michaels began his next rivalry with Mr. Kennedy. At Armageddon, Michaels defeated Kennedy. At Tribute to the Troops, Michaels had a D-Generation X reunion with Triple H as DX defeated Umaga and Mr. Kennedy. On December 31 edition of Raw, Michaels lost to Kennedy in an Armageddon rematch. Entering 2008, Michaels defeated Trevor Murdoch to qualify for the Royal Rumble match on January 14 edition of Raw. The following week, on January 21 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Mr. Kennedy to end the rivalry. At Royal Rumble, Michaels participated in the 2008 Royal Rumble match as the #2 entrant. He lasted thirty-two minutes until he was eliminated by Mr. Kennedy. John Cena won the 2008 Royal Rumble.

At No Way Out, Michaels competed against Triple H, Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho, Umaga and John "Bradshaw" Layfield in the Raw Elimination Chamber to determine the #1 contender for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XXIV. Michaels was eliminated by the eventual winner Triple H. Michaels announced Ric Flair's induction into the 2008 Hall of Fame, leading to Flair challenging Michaels to a match. As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Flair, which culminated in a Career Threatening match between the two at WrestleMania XXIV, which Michaels won. As a result, Flair was forced to retire and Michaels ended the career of Flair.

After retiring Ric Flair, Michaels was accused by Flair's former Evolution teammate Batista for using Flair's career to get to the top and Chris Jericho accused Michaels of being behind the stipulation of Flair's career threatening matches over the past few months. As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Jericho and Batista. At Backlash, Michaels cheated to defeat Batista, with Jericho as the special guest referee. Michaels feigned a knee injury and then used his Sweet Chin Music on Batista. Jericho began accusing Michaels of feigning the injury but Michaels claimed that he was hurt. Michaels eventually admitted to having feigned the injury after Jericho admitted that he was hurt.

At Judgment Day, Michaels defeated Chris Jericho. On May 26 edition of Raw, Michaels fought Jericho to a double count-out. At One Night Stand, Michaels lost to Batista in a Stretcher match to end the rivalry with Batista. On June 9 edition of Raw, Chris Jericho turned on Michaels by slamming his face into the Jeritron 6000 on Highlight Reel segment. At Night of Champions, Michaels was scheduled to compete against Jericho for the WWE Intercontinental Championship but could not compete due to an eye injury suffered during the attack by Jericho. As a result, Michaels was replaced by Kofi Kingston and helped Kingston in winning the championship.

During the rivalry, Chris Jericho took Michaels' former student Lance Cade under his wing. At The Great American Bash, Michaels lost to Chris Jericho by referee stoppage after Jericho repeatedly assaulted Michaels' injured eye. Due to the eye injury, Michaels was forced to retire at SummerSlam but Jericho interrupted Michaels' retirement speech and accidentally punched Michaels' wife Rebecca in the face, prompting Michaels to continue his career and feud with Jericho. At Unforgiven, Michaels defeated Jericho in an Unsanctioned match. At No Mercy, Michaels unsuccessfully challenged Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Ladder match after Lance Cade prevented Michaels from retrieving the championship belt from the top of the ladder.

At Cyber Sunday, Michaels was one of the choices to be the special guest referee for Chris Jericho's World Heavyweight Championship defense against Batista. Stone Cold Steve Austin won the audience poll and became the referee. Michaels briefly took over as the referee after Austin was knocked out but John "Bradshaw" Layfield delivered a Clothesline From Hell to Michaels to knock him out. On November 10 edition of Raw, Michaels lost to Jericho in a Last Man Standing match after JBL attacked Michaels. As a result, Michaels ended his rivalry with Jericho and began a new rivalry against JBL.

At Survivor Series, Michaels was the captain of Team HBK, consisting of Rey Mysterio, The Great Khali and Cryme Tyme against John "Bradshaw" Layfield's Team JBL, consisting of Kane, Montel Vontavious Porter, John Morrison and The Miz in a Survivor Series match. Team HBK won. Michaels, Mysterio and Khali survived the match. Michaels continued his rivalry with JBL, leading to JBL offering Michaels an employment as Michaels had lost much of his income in stock market and Michaels was forced to accept JBL's deal and become his employment.

On December 22 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Kane in a Race to the Rumble qualification match. The following week, on December 29 edition of Raw, Michaels competed against Chris Jericho, John "Bradshaw" Layfield and Randy Orton in a Race to the Rumble to determine the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship at Royal Rumble. Michaels was eliminated by JBL for the win. Entering 2009, Michaels tried to assist JBL in winning the World Heavyweight Championship against John Cena at Royal Rumble by delivering Sweet Chin Music to both men and putting JBL on top of Cena for the cover and left the ring but Cena defeated JBL.

After Michaels failed in getting JBL the World Heavyweight Championship, Michaels defeated JBL in an All or Nothing match, which stipulated that Michaels would be freed from his contract with full payment if he won and JBL would become the owner of Michaels' name and likeness if Michaels lost. On February 23 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated JBL to qualify for a match against Vladimir Kozlov, which in turn would determine Undertaker's opponent at WrestleMania. The following week, on March 2 edition of Raw, Michaels defeated Kozlov to qualify for the opportunity to end Undertaker's streak at WrestleMania. As a result, Michaels became the first person to end Kozlov's undefeated streak in singles competition.

Michaels began a rivalry with Undertaker, which culminated in a match between the two at WrestleMania XXV, which Undertaker won. The match received positive response from the WWE Universe and was considered one of the best matches of both men. After losing to Undertaker, Michaels disappeared from WWE television. On August 10 edition of Raw, Michaels returned to WWE television in a pre-taped video where Triple H discovered him as a cook in a San Antonio cafeteria, where Triple H convinced Michaels to come back and Michaels delivered a Sweet Chin Music to an angry little girl who was crying at him. On August 17 edition of Raw, Michaels returned to WWE to reform D-Generation X with Triple H.

After their reunion, DX began a rivalry with The Legacy. At SummerSlam, DX defeated Legacy. At Breaking Point, Legacy defeated DX in the first-ever Submissions Count Anywhere match. At Hell in a Cell, DX defeated Legacy in a Hell in a Cell match to end the rivalry. At Bragging Rights, DX were the captains of Team Raw, consisting of Big Show, Kofi Kingston, Mark Henry, Jack Swagger and Cody Rhodes against Chris Jericho and Kane's Team SmackDown!, consisting of Matt Hardy, Finlay, R-Truth and Hart Dynasty. Team SmackDown! won after Show turned on Team Raw by attacking Kingston, allowing Jericho to pin him for the victory.

At Survivor Series, Michaels competed against John Cena and Triple H in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship. Cena retained the championship. At TLC, D-Generation X defeated Jeri-Show in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match to win the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship. Entering 2010, Michaels participated in the 2010 Royal Rumble match as the #18 entrant. He lasted twenty minutes until he was eliminated by Batista. Edge won the 2010 Royal Rumble. The following night, on February 1 edition of Raw, Michaels lost to Randy Orton in an Elimination Chamber qualification match.

On February 8 edition of Raw, DX defended the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship against Straight Edge Society and The Miz and Big Show. Miz and Show won the championship after a miscommunication within DX. DX's reign ended at 57 days. At Elimination Chamber, Michaels interrupted in the SmackDown! Elimination Chamber for the World Heavyweight Championship by coming up from underneath the steel chamber and delivering a Sweet Chin Music to Undertaker, thus costing him the championship as Chris Jericho pinned Undertaker for the win.

As a result, Michaels began a rivalry with Undertaker, which culminated in a Career vs. Streak No Disqualification match between the two at WrestleMania XXVI, with Undertaker's WrestleMania winning streak and Michaels' professional wrestling career on the line. Undertaker won. As a result of losing, Michaels was forced to retire, thus ending his career. On March 29 edition of Raw, Michaels made his last appearance on WWE television. He made a farewell speech to end his twenty-two year prolific career of heartbreaks, showstops and multiple matches that were considered Match of the Year. His career that was also involved in controversies such as the backstage group The Clique and Montreal Screwjob, ended at once.

WWE Hall of Fame

Michaels returned to WWE television on January 10, 2011 edition of Raw, making his first WWE appearance in ten years. He came out following the announcement of his induction into the 2011 WWE Hall of Fame but Alberto Del Rio interrupted his speech, prompting Michaels to deliver a Sweet Chin Music to ADR. On March 28 edition of Raw, Michaels appeared to interrupt the confrontation between Undertaker and Triple H, during which Michaels predicted that Undertaker would beat Triple H at WrestleMania because Michaels' own career had ended while attempting to end Undertaker's WrestleMania winning streak.

On April 2, Michaels was inducted by Triple H into the 2011 WWE Hall of Fame. The following night, at WrestleMania XXVII, Michaels appeared alongside his fellow Hall of Famers of 2011. Michaels continued to appear on WWE television in a non-wrestling role after being inducted into the Hall of Fame. In 2012, Michaels was the special guest referee in an End of an Era Hell in a Cell match between Undertaker and Triple H at WrestleMania XXVIII, which Undertaker won. 

In 2013, Michaels was in Triple H's corner during his No Holds Barred match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 29. Later that year, Michaels served as the special guest referee for the WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan at Hell in a Cell. During the match, Michaels shocked the WWE Universe by delivering a Sweet Chin Music to Bryan, allowing Orton to pick the victory.
